Will Smith leads an intriguing prison murder mystery in Supermax, the upcoming Prime Video action thriller that has reportedly completed filming in Australia with AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke and Jaafar Jackson.
A prison built to keep every threat under control becomes the setting for a crime nobody can easily explain. That is the intriguing premise behind Supermax, Will Smith's upcoming action thriller, which has reportedly finished filming in Australia.
With David Gordon Green directing and an ensemble that includes AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Jaafar Jackson and Melissa Leo, the film brings together an established action star, an accomplished supporting cast and a setting designed to turn every locked door into a potential danger.
An October 21 report from ScreenRant, syndicated by IMDb, places the filming wrap on October 10, 2026, citing a social media post from a member of the production team.
A Murder Behind the Most Secure Walls
In Supermax, two FBI agents investigate a seemingly impossible murder inside the world's most secure prison. Smith plays Rex, while Robb portrays his fellow agent.
Their assignment puts a compelling question at the center of the action: how does a crime like this happen in a place built around absolute control?
That premise offers plenty of room for suspicion, tense encounters and shifting loyalties. A prison investigation can make even the simplest movement feel dangerous: entering a corridor, questioning a witness or trusting someone with access to a locked room.
Those possibilities are part of the film's appeal, although the filmmakers are keeping the fuller plot under wraps.
Will Smith Takes on an Original Action Mystery
For Smith, Supermax presents an opportunity to introduce audiences to a new character outside an established franchise.
His Bad Boys films have long drawn on his ability to combine humor, confidence and action. A prison murder mystery offers a different framework for those strengths, with the potential to place as much weight on uncertainty and investigation as on physical spectacle.
Smith is also producing through Westbrook alongside Adam Fishbach, with The Picture Company's Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman among the producers. His involvement therefore extends beyond his performance as Rex.
A Cast That Adds to the Anticipation
Robb, Clarke, Jackson and Leo give viewers several reasons to follow the project beyond its leading man. However, most of their character details remain undisclosed, leaving audiences to wonder who might help the investigation and who might complicate it.
Jackson's participation is particularly interesting as he builds his screen career beyond portraying his uncle in Michael. Joining an original thriller places him in a different genre and alongside an experienced ensemble.
For now, the attraction lies in the combination of performers rather than any confirmed details about how their characters fit together.
David Gordon Green Brings His Genre Experience
Director David Gordon Green has moved between comedy, drama and horror, with credits including Pineapple Express and the recent Halloween trilogy.
Supermax gives him another opportunity to work with tension, this time through a prison investigation written by David Weil and David J. Rosen.
The setting seems well suited to suspense. Restricted movement, controlled access and the constant presence of surveillance could make the prison itself a powerful part of the storytelling. How Green uses those elements will be one of the film's most interesting creative tests.
Amazon's Reported $70 Million Deal
Amazon MGM's involvement adds another notable element. The studio reportedly acquired worldwide rights from Miramax in a deal valued at approximately US$70 million, with the film intended to debut directly on Prime Video.
That reported figure concerns the acquisition of rights and should not be confused with a confirmed production budget.
Production also brought substantial activity to Australia. Screen NSW announced in August that the project was expected to generate more than A$53 million in local expenditure and create approximately 290 local jobs.
When Will Supermax Be Released?
A firm release date remains a detail to watch. Although October 2027 has appeared in coverage, reporting is inconsistent about whether that timing is confirmed. Viewers should await an official announcement from Amazon MGM or Prime Video before marking their calendars.
For now, Supermax has a strong central hook: Will Smith walking into a prison where security is supposed to answer every question, only to confront a murder that raises even more.
The cameras may have stopped rolling, but the mystery is just beginning.
