Kevin Pollak recalls how Tom Cruise's composure, Jack Nicholson's mischievous humor and a playful shoulder punch brought laughter to the set of A Few Good Men.
On screen, their confrontation was electric. Behind the camera, there was room for laughter.
Kevin Pollak has shared a delightful memory from the making of A Few Good Men, revealing how a moment of mischief from Jack Nicholson tested Tom Cruise's concentration—and ended with a playful punch to the shoulder.
It is a small story with an enduring charm: two remarkable performers creating an intense piece of cinema while still finding joy in each other's company.
A Serious Scene Meets Nicholson's Mischievous Side
Speaking on Steve Kmetko's Still Here Hollywood podcast, Pollak recalled filming the climactic courtroom exchange between Cruise's Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee and Nicholson's Colonel Nathan Jessep.
The camera was positioned close to Nicholson as it captured Cruise's performance. Beside the lens, Nicholson began pulling an exaggerated clown face, giving his scene partner an unexpected challenge during a demanding moment. Cruise held his concentration and completed the take.
Imagine the discipline that required. The audience would eventually see a young lawyer pushing a formidable commander toward the truth. Cruise, meanwhile, had to sustain that urgency while one of Hollywood's most expressive faces was doing its best to distract him.
There is something wonderfully human about that contrast. A scene remembered for its fierce intensity also carried a private moment of comedy between its stars.
The Punch That Ended in Laughter
According to Pollak, Cruise responded after finishing the scene by punching Nicholson in the shoulder. Both actors laughed afterward. Pollak's account presents the exchange as a playful response to Nicholson's teasing.
The laughter gives the story its warmth. It allows us to glimpse the ease behind the performances: the freedom to joke, the composure to keep working, and the pleasure of sharing a moment once the demanding work was done.
For Cruise, the anecdote offers an admirable example of focus. He carried the scene through before allowing himself to react. For Nicholson, it reveals the impish humor that could exist alongside his commanding screen presence.
Finding Joy in the Craft
Part of the pleasure of Pollak's recollection is how it changes our view of a familiar scene. Watch the courtroom confrontation again, and beneath its tension lies the knowledge that these actors could also make each other laugh.
Filmmaking asks performers to create emotions powerful enough for an audience to believe. Stories like this remind us that the people doing that work bring their own humor and personalities to the set.
The affection in this particular memory comes through in its ending. After the concentration, the provocation and the playful shoulder punch, two actors shared a laugh.
For audiences, A Few Good Men gave us an unforgettable confrontation. Through Pollak's recollection, it also gives us a lovely glimpse of the joy behind the craft.
