Actor Spotlight: David Jonsson is Marvel’s new Black Panther for Black Panther 3

David Jonsson will play T’Challa’s grown-up son as Marvel’s new Black Panther in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3, arriving in cinemas in December 2028.

David Jonsson is stepping into one of Marvel Studios’ most significant roles. The BAFTA-winning British actor has been selected as the new Black Panther and will play the grown-up son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa in Black Panther 3.

The casting gives Jonsson his biggest Hollywood franchise role yet. It also places an actor with Nigerian and Sierra Leonean family roots at the centre of a global film series celebrated for its African-inspired world and prominent showcase of Black talent.

Ryan Coogler introduces Marvel’s new Black Panther

Director Ryan Coogler announced Jonsson as the new Black Panther during Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026. Jonsson appeared at the event alongside returning franchise stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.

According to the official announcement from Disney and Marvel, Coogler will return to direct the third film. Marvel has scheduled Black Panther 3 for theatrical release on December 15, 2028.

No plot details or production start date have been announced. However, the confirmation that Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s grown-up son establishes the character who will carry the Black Panther identity into the next chapter.

David Jonsson’s rise from Industry to Marvel

Jonsson arrives in Wakanda after building an increasingly visible screen career through Industry, Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus. In 2025, audiences voted him the winner of the BAFTA EE Rising Star Award, underlining the public interest already surrounding his work.

That momentum now meets the scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio’s official casting-announcement video attracted approximately 353,771 views and 14,000 likes in the verified research snapshot, offering an early indication of audience attention around his selection.

Why this casting matters to African screen audiences

For Nollywood Spotlight readers, Jonsson’s appointment carries particular resonance. His West African heritage connects his Hollywood breakthrough to audiences in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the wider diaspora, while the franchise remains a major international platform for African-inspired storytelling.

This Actor Spotlight also reflects how performers with African roots are taking on increasingly visible roles across global entertainment. Jonsson now has the opportunity to bring his rising-star appeal to a character with exceptional cultural reach when Black Panther 3 arrives in 2028.
