Nigeria at 66: The Stories Nollywood Tells About Independence

On October 1, Nigeria marks 66 years since gaining independence in 1960. The green, white and green flag invites celebration—but it also invites a bigger question: what does independence mean in the lives of the people who have inherited it?

Nollywood has a way of bringing that question close. A film can take an event from a history book and show how it might feel inside a family, a community or a single difficult decision. It can celebrate Nigerian creativity while making room for painful chapters and unfinished conversations.

When history becomes a story

Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 is an especially fitting film to revisit today. Set on the eve of independence, the historical thriller follows a detective investigating killings in a Western Nigerian town. The approaching national celebration gives the mystery its tension: a country is preparing for a new beginning while troubling questions demand answers.

Izu Ojukwu’s ’76 looks at a later chapter. Set amid the events surrounding the attempted 1976 coup, the drama centers on a soldier and his wife. It reminds viewers that national history is also personal history, lived by people trying to protect those they love.

A voice that reaches beyond borders

Nollywood’s Independence Day story is bigger than any one historical film. Nigerian filmmakers tell stories of love, ambition, faith, humor, conflict and everyday life in ways that audiences at home and abroad can recognize. As those films travel, they give more people a chance to encounter Nigeria through characters and perspectives created by Nigerians.

That is worth celebrating this October 1: the freedom to keep telling stories, to question the past, and to imagine what the country could become next.
