Gina Rodriguez is stepping into a significant new phase of her filmmaking career. Production has begun on House of Guerrero, a boxing drama that will mark the actor-producer’s theatrical feature-directing debut after her previous work directing television episodes.
Deadline reported that an on-set video shared on September 14 identified the shoot as “Day 1,” moving the project beyond its earlier development stage. No release date, distributor, official trailer or final principal cast has been announced.
A comeback story developed by Rodriguez and Bernardo Cubría
House of Guerrero follows a young fighter whose promising career is interrupted before an opportunity emerges to return to the ring. Bernardo Cubría wrote the screenplay from an original story he developed with Rodriguez, who is also producing the film.
The project was initially announced in 2021 under the shorter title Guerrero. At that stage, Rodriguez was expected to direct, produce and co-star, while boxer Ryan Garcia was attached to play fictional fighter Alex Guerrero. Current reporting does not confirm whether either acting plan remains part of the revised production.
A substantial financing and production package
Rodriguez and Molly Breeskin are producing for I Can And I Will Productions. Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla represent 1Community, while Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof are producing for Wayfarer Studios.
Wayfarer Studios, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group and Clare LoCicero are co-financing the drama, with tax-credit financing from Three Point Capital. UTA is handling worldwide sales, although a distribution deal has not been announced.
The boxing sequences also come with experienced action talent. Fight choreography is being led by Clayton J. Barber, whose credits include Creed III and Black Panther, alongside Eric Brown, whose work includes John Wick: Chapter 3 and The Matrix Resurrections.
