Black Market targets 50,000 viewers at Tafawa Balewa Square, turning its Lagos screening into a major test of Nollywood community power and demand.
Nollywood audiences may be accustomed to discovering films in cinemas, on streaming platforms and through YouTube, but Black Market is testing something more ambitious: whether one production can bring 50,000 people together for a shared screening experience.
Rixel Studios has scheduled the crime thriller for September 26, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. With the date approaching, the planned gathering has become more than a premiere. It is an attempt to demonstrate the scale of the Community around Nigerian screen entertainment when viewers are invited to participate in a major cultural event.
A target beyond the current screening benchmark
Guinness World Records lists the largest attendance at a film screening as 43,624 people. That benchmark was established by Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena on October 4, 2015.
Black Market organisers are targeting 50,000 attendees at one location, approximately 14.6% above the listed record. However, the September 26 event remains a planned record attempt. Final attendance and any Guinness World Records recognition cannot be confirmed until after the screening and the relevant verification process.
The Lagos State Government has publicly pledged support for the initiative while directing organisers to obtain the required approvals and uphold professional standards suitable for an event of the proposed size.
Advance demand offers an important audience signal
More than 15,000 tickets had reportedly been sold by August 15. That figure is an earlier snapshot rather than a live audited total, but it suggests meaningful interest ahead of the event.
In a September 20 interview with TheCable Lifestyle, the filmmakers said thousands of people had registered before the trailer campaign intensified. They also identified university outreach as part of their mobilisation strategy.
That approach is significant for Nollywood producers. Instead of waiting for audiences to find a film after release, the campaign is treating attendance as a collective goal. It turns viewers into participants whose presence is central to the story surrounding the production.
The filmmakers and cast behind Black Market
Fatimah Binta Gimsay directed and co-wrote Black Market. Nora Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu are credited as producers, while Omowunmi Dada and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed serve as co-producers.
The official cast includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Lateef Adedimeji, Itele D-Icon, Uzor Arukwe, Kanaga Jnr, Folagade Banks and Tomiwa Tegbe.
Whatever the final attendance, the campaign points to an evolving audience model for African filmmaking. Nollywood’s reach is often measured through tickets, streams and YouTube views; Black Market is asking what that reach looks like when a vast audience gathers physically, in one place, around one film.
