Actor Spotlight: Anne Hathaway joins Tom Cruise in Paramount’s Days of Thunder sequel

Actor Spotlight: Anne Hathaway joins Tom Cruise in Paramount’s Days of Thunder sequel

Anne Hathaway joins Tom Cruise in Paramount’s Days of Thunder sequel as a racing-team owner and engineer, ahead of its June 2, 2028 theatrical release.

Anne Hathaway is heading to the racetrack for her next major screen role. The Oscar-winning actor has been confirmed as Tom Cruise’s co-star in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Days of Thunder sequel, bringing fresh star power and a significant new character to the racing franchise.

Cruise and Hathaway publicly announced the project from Daytona International Speedway on August 29, 2026. Paramount has scheduled the film for an exclusive theatrical release on June 2, 2028, with production reportedly expected to begin in early 2027.

Anne Hathaway takes a central role in the racing sequel

According to Variety, Hathaway will play a racing-team owner and engineer opposite Cruise, who returns as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle. The role places her inside the competitive and technical world of motorsport rather than on the edges of Cruise’s comeback story.

That detail makes her casting especially notable. A team owner and engineer can influence both the business and performance sides of racing, giving Hathaway a character with authority in an environment built around speed, pressure and high-stakes decision-making.

For this Actor Spotlight, the attraction is not simply the pairing of two established Hollywood stars. Hathaway’s defined role suggests that the sequel is being developed around a substantial new screen partnership rather than relying entirely on nostalgia for the original film.

A major theatrical production is taking shape

Jonathan Levine is attached to direct from a screenplay by Will Staples. Cruise is producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. The production is planned for IMAX, while its theatrical rollout is expected to include premium formats such as Dolby Cinema and 4DX.

Those plans position the sequel as a large-format cinema event. They also reflect the continuing value Hollywood places on recognisable actors, established intellectual property and spectacle designed to give audiences a reason to watch films in theatres.

Why the casting matters beyond Hollywood

For Nollywood Spotlight readers, Hathaway’s casting offers another example of how producers can revive a familiar property by introducing a new character with clear professional authority and narrative purpose. That is relevant to African filmmakers and producers considering how star casting, character design and theatrical presentation can work together.

The announcement has also attracted attention within NASCAR. The Associated Press reported that champions Joey Logano, Chase Briscoe and Kyle Larson were already discussing possible participation, while Hendrick Motorsports highlighted the potential benefit to the sport.

With Hathaway now confirmed, a release date secured and the racing community showing early interest, Paramount’s Days of Thunder sequel has moved beyond speculation. The next major signals will come as production approaches and the wider cast takes shape ahead of its summer 2028 arrival.

Since its publication in 2018, Adeyemi’s "Legacy of Orïsha" trilogy has captivated millions, spending an astonishing 175 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Adeyemi’s motivation for writing "Children of Blood and Bone" stemmed from a desire to celebrate Black identity and challenge stereotypes, inspired by the backlash to Amandla Stenberg’s casting in "The Hunger Games."
I wanted to write a story so good and so Black that everyone would have to read it—even if they were racist,
Adeyemi shared in an interview.

Her bold vision paid off. With almost 3 million copies sold worldwide, the series has cemented its place among the greatest fantasy works of all time.
